Car/Van Rental Agencies

Many groups rent vans from their home town while others fly into San Diego, CA and rent vans. In either case, you want to make sure that the rental company providing the vans allow you to take the vehicles into Mexico. Most rental companies that allow this require that you purchase Mexican auto insurance. We strongly recommend purchasing Mexican auto insurance regardless of rental company policies.

We have contacted several car rental agencies to learn which ones allow their vehicles into Mexico. Most allow cars rented from the San Diego airport location to travel into Mexico. If you are renting from another location you will need to find out what the policy is. Most rental agencies have a toll-free number where you can find out the policies for each rental office. You will need to specify that you wish to take the vehicle into Mexico. Most rental agencies require that Mexican insurance be purchased through the rental agreement as part of the rental package. When comparing prices, check on the following costs:

  • Cost per day (or per week if available)
  • How many miles are included in the package (Are these miles total miles, or per day or per week miles?)
    Cost per additional mile
  • Does Mexican insurance have to be purchased through the rental agency? (Most rental agencies do require this.)
  • Mexican insurance (cost per day or per week)
