This week at Agua Viva Ministries we had the lovely folks from Open Door Church come down to work on construction projects here at Agua Viva and to run a Vacation Bible School in Colony 89, an area on the outskirts of the city of Ensenada. At camp the main construction project was renovating Monte Zion, one of the cabins, for this summer’s youth camp. The cabin went from being completely gutted to having insulated, painted walls thanks to Open Door Church’s work. For the second construction project, since Open Door Church has a lot of wonderful young kids, they wanted to put some new life into Agua Viva’s playground. They replaced the rotting parts of an old play structure and put fresh paint on the swing set, jungle gym, teeter totter, and merry-go-round. The playground looks bright and happy even from all the way across the field.
The most important work, however, was probably done at the VBS. Here we brought the Word of God to neighborhood kids and their families. Through crafts, sports, memory verses, and songs we were able to speak truth and love into the lives of those who came. While we certainly cannot see the results of VBS the way we can with construction, the fact is that the value of spending time getting to know someone who otherwise might be ignored or picked on has eternal value. Holding VBS gave us the opportunity to talk to these kids and to show them a small part of God’s love, and for that we are grateful.
