Small Details, Big Impact

Small Details, Big Impact

The other week, Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church (Los Alamitos, CA) and Christ Pacific Church (Huntington, CA) held a children’s ministry at a local sports complex through our Short Term Missions program. This sports complex is owned and operated by the city of Ensenada and is kept up through the small $3 peso (less than 20 cents) charge per person to get in. The first day we arrived, their coordinator, Becca, and I parked on the street while the vans pulled into the parking lot. As we walked up, the vans had just pulled through the gate and the woman who works at the park saw us coming. I greeted her with a “buenas tardes!” and she looked relieved. “Oh good! You speak Spanish! Are you with them?” I replied that I was indeed with the group that had just pulled in. “The woman in the first van seemed to understand some of what I was saying, but she didn’t speak any Spanish. She seemed very sweet! We just couldn’t communicate!”

She introduced herself as Leti, and Becca and I chatted with her for a few minutes as we explained what we were doing and told her how many of us there were so we could pay our entrance fee. Every day, Becca and I would go see Leti when we arrived, say hello, and pay the $5 dollars that would cover us as well as any kids who came to attend. On Thursday, she said that she wouldn’t be working the last day we would be there because it was her day off. We told her how nice it was to have met her and thanked her for being so helpful and accommodating us. Then she told us, “This week, after your first day, kids have been waiting for you guys to get here. I see how much you care for them, and the kids see it too. They feel your love and care. Thank you for that!”

The short-term missions groups that partner with us share a testimony with the community. They not only are caring for and loving the kids, but the community sees that and is impacted as well. God’s love overflows through them, and we will probably never know just how far it goes. We were blessed through Leti last week with an opportunity to get a glimpse of how God is working, and it is beautiful!
