Javier and Carmela Mendez

Mam people, Chiapas.

Javier and Carmela arrived at Agua Viva thinking they would just learn a bit more about the Bible and then return home. Upon arrival, a mission event profoundly changed their perspective.

For the first time, they learned that believers are commanded to share the Gospel. Previously, their understanding of Christianity was limited to good behavior and obeying rules. At CECAM, they received discipleship, discovered intimacy with God, and learned of unreached people groups.

Without hesitation, Javier and Carmela committed to the call, and the Spirit of God transformed their simple lives into a valiant, unstoppable force for the Gospel.

Returning to their home state of Chiapas, they set their focus on reaching the Mams, an unreached people group in Mexico’s mountainous region bordering Guatemala. The Mams are held captive by old traditions and a fierce spirit of independence. With their own indigenous roots, Javier and Carmela well understand the peoples’ thinking.

The challenges they have faced are numerous—death threats, confrontations with men with machetes, rifles, and pistols, and the loss of all their belongings when chased out of town. Yet, none of these hardships have slowed them down or shaken their resolve. They live with impressively powerful faith.
